 WINTER TRAVEL SAFETY 101
By Danny Twitchell
☑ Dress for the weather!
• Wear a hat, gloves, insulated coat, winter boots
and snow pants.
• Dress in layers and wear a synthetic base layer
that wicks away body moisture. Keep in mind that where you are going could be colder than where you are departing from.
• Carry extra socks, face masks and gloves - these items tend to get wet while traveling.
☑ Only leave your vehicle if the location is dangerous and/or if you know where exactly you are and know that you can safely walk to a better location.
☑ Always let someone know your travel plan, i.e. where you are going and when you intend to be back.
☑ If you do happen to break down or get lost, best practice is to stay with your vehicle if conditions allow. It is easier for search and rescue team to locate a vehicle than it is to locate a moving person.

☑ Carry a survival or emergency kit that includes: water, high calorie food, fire starter, medical kit, a set of clothes in a dry bag and a signaling/ communication device (mirror, flares, spot, sat phone, laser, cell phone, etc.).
• Inspect emergency travel bag/kit prior to traveling.
• Inspect satellite phone or communication device and make sure the battery is charged and is in working condition.
☑ Do a thorough pre-travel inspection of your vehicle (snowmachine, four-wheeler, etc.).
☑ Look over your equipment and ensure it is in good working condition. Make sure you have extra fuel and critical spare parts (spark plugs, belts and tools to conduct maintenance).
