BETHEL SEARCH AND RESCUE AND WINTER SAFETY
By Colleen Laraux
2020 marks the tenth year Donlin Gold has supported the Bethel Search and Rescue (BSAR) team. BSAR is a volunteer group that is called upon to search for missing or overdue people in the Bethel area. The group started in 1970 and has grown to over 50 dedicated volunteers. In addition to search and rescue missions looking for missing people, BSAR marks trails in the region and has teams who mark open water so that travelers have trails to follow and are aware of open water along the river system.
BSAR has been called upon by the Alaska State Troopers, Bethel Police Department, the Civil Air Patrol and other search and rescue groups in the State of Alaska to assist in searching for people. They conduct searches by foot, snow machine, boat and airplane.
With the cold weather upon us, please make sure to travel safely and pack appropriate gear, whether you are going on a short logging trip or on a long hunting trip. Be sure to check the River Report on the BSAR website before traveling.
At Donlin Gold, our motto is “Every person going home safe and healthy every day,” and we are honored to support the BSAR group, who is ready to answer the call whenever and wherever they are needed.
