DONLIN GOLD BACKHAUL PROJECT 2020
By Rebecca Wilmarth
The 2020 Donlin Gold Backhaul Project, In It for The Long Haul, was a multi-organizational effort led by Donlin Gold’s Community Relations team. Fifteen villages across the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta were able to participate in this year’s backhaul event, which allowed them to remove and safely dispose of harmful e-waste from their communities. Donlin Gold coordinated with Tribal Administrators and their staffs to safely collect, package and prepare for transport old electronics, small appliances and household batteries.
For transportation, Donlin Gold partnered with Native Village of Napaimute, Brice Inc. and Grant Aviation to barge and fly e-waste materials to Bethel where they were further transported to Anchorage for final recycling. Donlin Gold partnered with Delta Backhaul Company and the Association of Village Council Presidents (AVCP) for coordination of logistics in collecting, consolidating and packaging e-waste for safe transport.
Overall, the backhaul event was a huge success that was carried out safely while following strict COVID-19 protocols including social distancing, face masks
and very limited gathering. A total of 60,000 pounds
of e-waste was collected and removed from the communities, adding to the running total of nearly 120,000 pounds over the course of the project in the last three years. We would like to thank all of our community and business partners who made this project a safe and successful event.
